Good luck with the books and the web site, Matt. The Penthouse was quite a place. Must have cost a fortune getting the smell of chip fat and, er, other substances out of the fabric of the building.

Do say hello and thanks to Peter/Rahim when you next see him though I doubt he'll remember a scruffy and impoverished cub reporter from the Scarborough Evening News.

Hi, David, as I was researching various gig dates for my 40th Anniversary Penthouse website (which may go live before Christmas - don't hold your breath), I spotted your "...whatever happened to?" The answer is, it became a block of posh flats, named imaginatively The Penthouse, by the same company which also redeveloped The Hacienda in Manchester, trading on similar history. I was the main DJ at The Penthouse for some 11 years (traitorously, I went back at the invitation of its subsequent owner, who earned my deep admiration by trying to set fire to his accounts in the club's attic. Of course, loathing is a far more appropriate expression, as he destroyed a fabulous collection of original records in pic sleeves that I'd acquired for Peter Adams between 1970 and 1979. I'm currently writing two books with my friend, GP Taylor, due for publication some time next year. (Despite having signed contracts with the very reputable publishers many months ago, the advances are now so tardy, they may well need retitling as "afterthoughts." Hope this helps satisfy your thirst for knowledge. I still see Peter (now Rahim and living in Europe) and I've got stacks of audio interviews with many of the artists who played there, as well as a walk-round the building site before the flats were constructed. All this will eventually make it to the website. Best wishes, Matt Watkinson

I saw Saul a couple of weeks ago when we did an event together in London and he said he was reading it and about to go into the studio. Normally it takes about six months for the audio to come out and I would imagine this would be the case here. If you need a more accurate date please contact the audio publisher WF Howes (http://www.wfhowes.co.uk/) who will be happy to help I'm sure.
Sorry about the time gap but these are unabridged books so it's a lot of work!

Hi Vanessa. Thanks for coming (all the way from Doncaster?) I’m glad you enjoyed the event and hope I didn’t witter on too much. What a beautiful museum too - like being in a posh Italian villa. Halifax is quite a place. I had the full Yorkshire breakfast, including black pudding, before I left too, so I don’t think I will be moving much further than my desk for a while.

I’m not aware of any invitation to Harrogate next year though that shouldn’t stop you - it’s a fantastic event. My next confirmed event in Yorkshire is at the Scarborough Literature Festival where I’ll be appearing at a panel on April 24 at 12 noon with some other writers, yet to be announced. Will be nice to have a trip to the seaside, and the place where I had my first job.
Best
David

PS. I think my events are going to be listed on Facebook soon so if you’d like to receive news of them there just add me as a friend - same goes for anyone here.

Yes - it's a lovely place, though I have to say the very posh tin of monkfish tripe which I brought home from there as a present for someone was not too well received!
