author of the Nic Costa series and more

The next Rome book makes an early entrance

dantesnumbers2Fans of Nic Costa in the UK can now expect a second book during 2008 after the sellout of the latest title, The Garden of Evil, in the first week of publication. The next in the series, Dante’s Numbers, will now go on sale through Pan Macmillan in the UK on October 3, 2008, to be followed in April 2009 by the US edition from Bantam Dell.

The novel begins in Rome, at the world premiere of a movie based on The Divine Comedy. After one of the leading actors is murdered, and another attacked, the story then moves to San Francisco for the remainder of the book. The narrative covers some well-known and less familiar locations in Italy and California, from the tiny Cinema dei Piccoli in the park of the Villa Borghese in Rome to the districts of Cow Hollow and the Marina near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

You can read my thoughts on the origins of the book, and view some photos of the locations, in its section on this site.

    Hello Mr Hewson.
I have all the Nic Costa books to date and think them an excennent addition to my favourites list Donna Leon,Michael Dibdin and Andrea Camilleri. I look forward to the next one very much but was a bit concerned that much of the action will take place in the USA—hope this won’t spoil the particular ‘aura’ that the books have-the main reason that I feel appeals to me about them is their sense of ‘place’ and the sights, sounds and even smells of Rome. Please say Teresa will be in the book-she is one of the great inventions in detective fiction.

Thanks again for a fantastic series

    regards

Hi Colette. Glad you like the books. Dante’s Numbers is very much a Roman story not an American one, and a substantial part of it is set in Rome. But I do think it’s a good idea to move the cast around from time to time and as you will see with Dante there is nowhere else this particular story could be told in part except a very small area of San Francisco.

Teresa is in there big time, and in some ways it’s her book. I can’t imagine a way of keeping her out even if I wanted to (which I definitely dont). The book after Dante, which is already finished and will be out in the UK in October next year and in the US probably in April 2010 is very much back in Italy, as will be the one after that which I am starting to work on now. But I do like the gang to be outsiders from time to time - it brings out new aspects in them.
